Wonderful wonderful. Vampirella was always at the comic book store in the "magazine" section with "Famous Monsters" ... I was never allowed to buy one, but the covers vexed me because I could not for the life of me figure out how her outfit stayed on. #vampiremagic
Coming from an Archie and Veronica, Little Nancy, and Dennis the Menace background, this post was a big education for me. Thank you, E.R. for opening the doors to a wider universe.
Jack Kirby, the artists of Heavy Metal, and advice from an editor (underground cartoonist Skip Williamson) led me to draw comics.
I’m a huge fan of Tardi and Gonzalez, too. I have a monster bookcase bursting with the works of Giraud/Moebius. And another one stuffed with Cadelo, Bilal, Manara, Floc’h, Janjetov, Boucq, Arno, Bess, Giardino, Adamov, Benoit, Schuiten and more. Heavy Metal / Métal Hurlant was such a huge influence. I was a drooling fan in the seventies and eighties. I used to have books shipped to me from France. The bookstore owner would hold me on the line to critique my choices. I remember having some pretty heated (expensive) arguments about style.
A buddy of mine (Shane White: Beyond the Process on Substack) just inked a drawing of Jonah Hex in the style of Moebius. It’s worth checking out.
¡Bravo, mi amigo! A wonderful collection of inspiration. You were lucky to have a bookstore near you. Where I lived as a teen (in a small bumpkin town in upstate NY) there were only two newsstands that carried Heavy Metal and Warren Magazines. Often I would get to the stand too late and they were sold out. Those mags were like water to a man in a desert in terms of outside culture and art.
I often wonder if that difficulty in getting the issues heightened the value of the art inside the mags, and if in our world of oversaturated imagery if that kind of perceived superiority of, and inspiration from, art can even be instilled in kids now?
I'll have to give a look to Shane White's work! I love me some Moebius.
These days, A.I. and Manga have kids in their thrall. I'm hopeful a Punk D.I.Y. comics artist/messiah will come along to break those chains and open some minds.
BTW, I'm not dissing manga. I just think young artists need more diversity. And they need to feel free to create something fresh and not follow a formula. Okay, I looked in the mirror. Yup, I'm old. And I'm rambling.

Lovely!
Bravo!! Beautiful work. Awesome tribute. Silly dog.
Okay, you asked for this:

Couldn't agree more.

I enjoyed a glimpse into the cartoonists that inspired you. Thank you!
Ha! Thanks. I gave Zeke the job of seeking out those judges and then pooping on their lawns.
